About Overwatch

Overwatch is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment. Wikipedia

Greetings! I’ve played Overwatch since Open Beta, so I should have a firm grasp on what a beginner should look into playing. I’ll give you one hero from each class so you (or whoever else is a beginner) can have a selection. There are four classes- Offense, Defense, Tank, and Support.

  1. Soldier 76 (Offense) – I’m gonna be honest, this guy is a perfect starter if you’re coming from Call of Duty (or have experience with the game). It was essentially his purpose to teach those gamers Overwatch. (I won’t go deep into detail on his abilities beyond the basics). His primary is a heavy pulse rifle. 25 in the clip. (Don’t worry. Infinite ammo 🙂 He shoots three projectiles from it in one burst known as helix rockets. Splash damage so pop that into groups. Just like CoD, you can sprint! It’s infinite too. He can whip out a biotic field to heal himself and other players. Use that wisely. His ultimate is the tactical visor. It is literally just aimhacks. Before you say “Omg he’s so overpowered though..” He isn’t. Overwatch is a team game so you need to work with them or else you’re gonna die because you thought you could split up.
  2. Bastion (Defense) – This lil murderous robot from the days before Overwatch is a very easy character to do. As you go up in the ranks (around 30–40 and above) people will learn to counter this with heroes like Genji. His concept? Point and shoot. Just hold in right click when he’s in turret mode and aim at the enemies. Easy play of the game. Team kill. All that. He has two modes. Recon mode is where he is standing and can walk. He used a sub machine gun in this mode. In Sentry mode, things get fun. He has a full-blown Gatling gun that he can use to obliterate the enemy Reinhardt shield. (He is on the list, I know. He needs a good team to help with Bastions.) He can change configurations/modes quickly and can self-repair! If someone is shooting at him, it’ll be a struggle. Find a place to hide then jump back out and Gatling gun the enemy. Then there is his Ultimate ability! Tank mode. Essentially he becomes a roving tank for however many seconds shooting rockets as he pleases. He can even rocket jump with it to get to higher enemies.
  3. Reinhardt (Tank) – Ah, Reinhardt. Truly my favorite German hammer-swinging warrior. His premise is quite simple actually. “You hold the door.” – Hodor. Kidding, he actually does shield things though. Holding right click (PC) puts up a barrier that can block 2,000 damage before it needs several seconds to regenerate. He can swing the hammer and bat around enemies like crazy dealing a decent amount of damage. He can activate a boost on his back and charge into an enemy. This catches them and slams them into a wall or just drives them back. Usually killer to 200 health heroes. His other ability is firestrike. He literally whips a ball of fire from his hammer at you. Terrifying when you’ve got little health. His ultimate is literally hammertime. Earthshatter basically slams his hammer into the ground shattering an area in front of him and knocking down all the heroes there. Aim for large groups with this one. Other Reinhardt’s shields block this with their barrier.
  4. Mercy (Support) – And, our last hero. Mercy is a beautiful Swiss doctor with the secret to resurrecting fallen (dead) heroes. She is the most basic healer there is. You walk up to someone and heal. Her primary is her Caduceus Staff. She uses it to spray one or two beams of energy to either heal or damage boost a teammate. The healing should be your main use, but don’t make the mistake to ignore damage boosting friendly heroes entirely. Her secondary is the Caduceus Blaster. It’s a pistol she can use to defend herself. It does okay damage, but you’re a healer. Her bodysuit allows her to float down from heights and even fly up or over to teammates to heal them. Her ultimate ability is Resurrect. The idea of this is quite direct. You fly into a group of golden souls (left where your teammates died) and bring them all back. Big rezes on the point or payload really help, but judging who and how many to rez is something you’ll pick up on.

I do hope this helps anyone who needs a good startup hero set. Enjoy the game!

Generally, the easiest characters to pick up are the ones with a low skill floor, meaning you can use them and understand their usage and be effective in a short span of time. These are:

  • Soldier 76 – basic FPS character which anyone familiar with FPS games can pick up and play. Has run, assault rifle, hit scan, and a healing field.
  • Torbjorn – although very difficult to really use to his full potential, Torb is easy to get value out of because he has an auto-aim turret. When all else fails just drop the turret and it’ll do its work without your help, assuming the enemy doesn’t blow it up.
  • D.Va – the easiest tank to play, used to be quite powerful but has been brought down to earth. Fast and mobile, unlimited ammo, large hit radius, lots of life, and you eject upon death to play like a regular FPS character with a pistol.
  • Reinhardt – although difficult to play to the best of his potential, Reinhardt is very easy to get value out of. Just put the shield up and let your team wail away from behind you.
  • Mercy – the easiest healer to use, just press a button and you’re healing. Look no hands! Her improved mobility also make her really survivable.
  • Lucio – another healer that’s relatively easy to use, you can heal just by standing around so you can focus on evasion, watching the enemy and attacking.

Everyone else is relatively difficult to use in terms being effective and getting value out of them. They may have difficult mechanics or require more advanced concepts to show their potential.

It will almost always help to look at the difficulty rating of the character you want to try out. I would suggest reaper, bastion, and junkrat as beginner characters.

Reaper:

I mainly suggest reaper as a starting character for 3 reasons:

  1. He deals a massive amount of damage when you are close to an enemy.
  2. His shots have a large spread, making it fairly easy to hit targets.
  3. He gets 50 health when he kills an enemy and harvests their soul.

Overall, Reaper deals a lot of damage without having to aim too much, while healing quickly. However, as reaper does not have a lot of health, he is forced to flank which could prove difficult for a beginner player.

I would not suggest Bastion normally, but since his buffs, he’s really, really op. He’s a machine gun that can run around and heal himself. Try him.

Junkrat: junkrat is essentially a spam character that gets onto high ground and lobs grenades everywhere. The main reason I suggest junkrat is that YOU DON’T HAVE TO AIM AT ALL while playing him. The grenades from his grenade are timed, but will go off early when they hit an enemy. Since they’re timed, they bounce around and 90% of the time they hit someone. Junkrat deals a massive amount of damage when played correctly. Some tips: hang back behind your team and provide them cover. Try to get high ground with only one entrance, and lay your bomb and trap down in the that entrance so if anyone flanks you, you blow them up.

Hope this helped!

Let me just open with people who say mercy is easy are deluded. People who don’t play mercy don’t know how much we’re actually doing. It looks like we are just holding down our staff, but at all times, a top mercy player will be busy reading minds.

For people who have poor or mediocre aim like me, here are some characters focused entirely on positioning and game knowledge.

Winston-no aim required tank. Plays as a bully. You need to know when to get in and out of fights. How much damage you can soak.

Symmetra-turret placement, game knowledge, no ain required.

Mercy-as a mid diamond mercy player, I can say that people in this elo have very good aim. They will take you out the minute you mis-positioned. They will seek you first in every fight. You are a valuable head. Mercy is 40% positioning, 30% game knowledge, 20% mind reading, and 10% mechanics. You need to be able to guess read valuable enemy ultimate and know when to hide with res and when not to. You need to know who to heal, and the level of risk imposed on yourself if you try to heal them. Make decisions if it is worth it. In addition, in some cases, the best defense is a stronger offense, and you need to make those decisions. Do I power up my reaper while he ults the enemy or do I try to keep my zarya- alive because she has high charge? Or my Winston because he’s trying to soak damage? That mindset is a must if you want to play mercy at a high level.

Ana-mediocre aim skill required. Can strongly influence a fight with well placed grenades and sleep darts. Support.

Zarya- tank who focuses on soaking damage with her bubbles. Low aim required. She has a giant laser cannon which is quite easy to aim with.

Dva-very little aim required. Her shots aim wide. You need to have, like Winston, good knowledge of when to be where and how to be there.

Reaper-medium aim required dps. He’s not difficult to aim with since his shot is very thick and he tends to enjoy getting into people’s faces. Also, he is mainly responsible for shredding tanks, which are easy target to aim at to begin with.

This is one of the reasons I love overwatch. I don’t come from a shooter background but I love the thrill of the constant ongoing team fights in overwatch. Lucky for me, I can still play the game even if I don’t have kephrii’s aim or taimou’s flick.

There are 3 heroes I’d suggest for beginners.

1- Soldier 76. Soldier is built to emulate the feel of more standard FPS games; he has healing, damage, and utility all built into his kit, allowing a player to learn all of the basics of the game.

2- Roadhog. Roadhog is a hero who is very good at staying alive, thanks to his high health pool and self-healing abilities. His playstyle is very straight-forward: Hook, Shoot, repeat. A very forgiving character and therefore a great one for beginners.

3- Lucio. Lucio is a support, with a mixture of utility (In his speed boost) and healing abilities. He has a basic attack, and one that allows the player to blast an enemy back. Lucio is less dependant on aim, and simply needs to stay alive amongst his teammates. What’s more, his ability to ‘wall-run’ introduces the player to the thought processes required for heroes who move around the map in different ways, such as Genji, Widowmaker, Winston, Tracer, and Reaper.
